A consultation has opened on how offshore wind projects are planned and delivered in Scotland, following the publication of a draft update to the Sectoral Marine Plan for Offshore Wind Energy (SMP-OWE). The revised plan aims to balance environmental protection, community interests and the needs of other sea users.
The updated SMP-OWE will help guide offshore wind development resulting from the ScotWind and Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) seabed leasing rounds.
Key proposals in the plan include:
- using the latest data and scientific research to assess impacts on wildlife and nature
- clearly outlining the environmental, social and economic opportunities and constraints of offshore projects
- taking into account the views and interests of other marine users, such as fishers, coastal and island communities, and environmental organisations
The consultation is open until 22 August 2025.
