The UK National Energy System Operator (NESO) has confirmed a new pipeline of deliverable, shovel-ready energy projects that will be prioritised for connection to the electricity networks in the UK. NESO has worked with government, investors, networks, Ofgem, and the wider energy sector on an overhaul of the connections process. For years, outdated rules left projects in a queue that had grown to more than 700 GW, around four times what is required by 2030.

WindEurope and Hitachi Energy have released a joint study assessing the total system costs of five possible energy pathways for Europe to 2050. Four pathways reach net zero, while a fifth “slow transition” pathway does not. The analysis concludes that a system built around high shares of wind and solar remains the lowest-cost option, even when accounting for grids, storage and back-up generation.

Germany’s Bundestag has agreed changes to the WindSeeG framework following an offshore wind auction for centrally pre-examined sites in 2025 that received no bids. On the recommendation of the Economic Affairs and Energy Committee, the government will set auction volumes for 2026 at 2,500–5,000MW to provide more flexibility after the empty tender and to allow time to adjust auction design before the next round in 2027.
