Electrical Oil Services has completed the filling of four large transformers as part of the Celtic Interconnector project, which will link the electricity systems of Ireland and France. Each transformer was filled with around 75,000 litres of insulating oil at a substation in Brittany, France.
For every unit, three full oil circulation cycles were carried out, alongside a vacuum phase lasting more than 48 hours. This process removes moisture and dissolved gases from the oil, supporting stable electrical insulation during operation.
The Celtic Interconnector is being developed jointly by EirGrid and Réseau de Transport d'Électricité. The project consists of a 575 kilometre high voltage direct current transmission link, with approximately 500 kilometres routed beneath the Celtic Sea. Once operational, the interconnector will have a capacity of 700 MW and is intended to strengthen security of supply while supporting the integration of renewable energy sources between the two systems.
Siemens Energy is responsible for the construction of the converter stations in Ireland and France. Nexans will supply and install the subsea cable. Christof Industries is carrying out the transformer installation works and appointed Electrical Oil Services to undertake the oil filling activities.
