Iberdrola has begun assembling the turbines for what will be Portugal’s largest wind project. Formed by the Tâmega Norte and Tâmega Sur sites, the development is part of an agreement with the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund managed by Norges Bank Investment Management and will operate under a long-term power purchase agreement.
The project combines wind and hydroelectric generation using shared grid connection infrastructure. Located between Braga and Vila Real, the project will install 38 Vestas EnVentus V172 turbines rated at 7.2 MW, with 85-metre blades and towers of 114 metres. The expected annual output is 601 GWh.
More than 110 blades will be shipped from the port of Aveiro. Final transport to the assembly area will use a blade-lift system that allows each blade to be rotated vertically or horizontally through a hydraulic mechanism, reaching inclinations of up to 60 degrees to navigate sharp bends, steep gradients and other obstacles on existing roads.
Construction is due to continue until the third quarter of 2026, with all turbine components scheduled for delivery by the end of the first quarter.
