The Trump administration has told a federal District Court that its review of a key permit for the SouthCoast Wind offshore wind project has been delayed. The project, developed by Ocean Winds, has a planned capacity of 2.4 GW.
According to court filings, the government said a high workload linked to the review of multiple offshore wind projects has affected its ability to complete the SouthCoast Wind permit review within the expected timeframe. The Department of the Interior indicated that it currently lacks the relevant staff to set a firm timeline for completing the process.
Officials also stated that ongoing litigation and the volume of offshore wind-related cases are holding up the permit review and could lead to further delays. The government told the court that it will provide an updated timeline once staffing resources and caseload pressures allow.
The delay comes as part of a broader federal review of offshore wind permits approved under the previous administration. Earlier court decisions have confirmed that the Department of the Interior has the authority to reconsider approvals, including that of the SouthCoast Wind project.
