The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has approved the construction of the Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farm, the second project in Vattenfall’s Nordlicht cluster. Nordlicht 1 has a planned capacity of around 980 MW, while Nordlicht 2 will add around 630 MW.

Nordlicht 2 will be located north of Borkum in the western part of the German exclusive economic zone. The project will consist of 44 turbines rated at 15 MW each, across an area of about 44 square kilometres. Power will be transmitted via the BorWin Delta converter platform, part of the NOR-6-3 grid connection.

Offshore construction is scheduled to start in 2026 for Nordlicht 1 and in 2027 for Nordlicht 2, with both wind farms expected to be operational in 2028. The two sites are projected to generate around 6 terawatt hours of electricity per year.
